Shot in the old village of Fengjie, a small town on the Yangtze River which is slowly being destroyed by the building of the Three Gorges Dam in China, the film tells the story of two people in search of their spouses even as the construction goes on and the village vanishes from sight, slowly yet tumultuously affecting the lives in that area. It's December 6, 1999, and in a Chennai racked by communal violence on the 7th anniversary of the destruction of the Babri Mosque in Ayodhya, a retired archeologist named Saket Ram lies dying of heart disease. Keeping vigil at his bedside, his grandson, a Hindi novelist, narrates part of the old man's life story to the attending physician — a true story that he implies to be stranger than any fiction.

He is also the beloved of the capitalist and exploiter Padayachi’s daughter, Balla. Nalla meets with an accident -- he loses his leg and his face is disfigured. He goes to Bhubaneswar to pick up a cheque for the workers whose cause he espouses. On his flight back to Chennai, he clashes with Anbarasu, a co-passenger, over their differing ideologies. He also learns that Anbarasu is headed for Chennai to get married to none other than Balla.
