FILM CLUB SCREENING - A selection of films from Indian Panorama 2010 - Achin Pakhi (Bengali/2009/118mins) Dir. Anjan Das.The seemingly ordinary story of Rai Saheb, his wife Mita, mentally challenged son Tanu and an obedient servant Achin. Tanu kills the maidservant of the house and Rai Saheb sends Achin away to a remote island, airing a hoax that it was Achin who killed the maid and fled. At the island Achin falls in love with a fisherman’s daughter Pakhi. Love prospers but is soon jinxed as Rai Saheb notices Pakhi on one of his visits to Achin and chooses her as a bride for his son. The heartbroken lovers decide to elope but unfortunately Achin is caught and jailed. Ali then hatches a scheme to produce a fake Osama video and sell it to news channels as a breakthrough scoop! But the spirited Mahesh and his girlfriend quit their jobs and find a way to survive, despite a major tragedy coming their way. Lenin Rajendran.The film tells the story of Raja Ravi Varma at a certain stage in his life. He is in the process of painting a masterpiece. The theme of his painting is Pururavas, the legendary king who fell in love with the heavenly nymph Urvashi, who later agrees to become his wife on certain conditions, but disappears without a trace when she discovers that the conditions were violated. Pururavas wanders all around to find her and ultimately does get united with his lover. Ravi Varma, during his work, finds himself attracted to his model Anjali Bhai and this relationship begin to acquire certain shades of the legend of Urvashi and Pururavas.
