Romance With The Delhi Roads Paintings by
Rohit Sharma
Theme of the Exhibition:- The city has away of encompassing each individual in its own way. The city of Delhi more so with its antiquity, rich cultural heritage and constant growth. The diversity of the city is quite spell binding. There are landmarks representing the ancient, medieval and modern giving it a unique identity. The roads that lead on to these have their own stories to tell ...mostly known only to its inhabitants. It is this labyrinthine of roads and maps that form the background to Rohit's new series of work which looks at the city from a simple yet subtle perspective. It is this fascination for minute details which makes Rohit's work stand out offering the viewer a new perspective. This series focuses on the Cow, along revered animal and referred to as "The holy cow" as it too finds itself at crossroads within the changing urban scenario. This urban change whether it has evolved or dissolved is for one to comprehend. Inter playing with the maze of roads-converging, diverging. Rohit's Cows are in a state of question, answer, dilemma and sometimes in deep meditative contemplation. He further explores the maze with the eyes of the unborn calf and of what awaits it. The putting of two heads with one body moving in opposite directions is also a reflection of the time for many. The use of red in the background is a conscious effort to draw attention to the road rage evident is our city with its space restraints and modern developments. It also in many ways signifies attraction for the outsider. The riddle for the young child to make the calf reach its mother is a beautiful way to communicate about the present state. With the Cow within the city being pushed out, the modern Cow which travels everyday from the outskirts of Delhi on four wheels makes an interesting satirical comment. Rohit is touched by the obvious and easy to ignore but none can deny the role played in the life of denizens of Delhi by the ubiquitous auto rickshaw which has a character of its own. The young man with aback pack pushing the auto rickshaw makes a subtle comment as how much goes in every journey - the cajoling, pleading, threatening to get one to go ones way. The city that we inhabit never seems to sleep - the resting auto driver is a reflection of rest snatched whenever possible which is true for most of the cities inhabitants. The vintage car is a reflection of a bygone era when they ruled the road and now viewed in heritage rallies is a refection of the attachment of the owner not willing to let go taking pride in his possession. Hence, Rohit paints his vintage car golden. It also brings out love and compassion for the UN animated. These explorations are a reflection of Rohit's intimacy with his city inviting all of us to look at the obvious with anew understanding and sensibility. Rohit's work has evolved over a period of time with deep influence of his working in the city....as a student at the college of art and then as an art teacher, his understanding of the nuances of life in the city are reflected in his keen sense of observation of day to day life .... which unfolds in his work which most tend to ignore. This series brings out the obvious understated yet always visible part of being in the city. The cows, the vehicles all with distinct identity and ...the background of the labyrinthine streets that they inhabit. This body of work brings us to face the realities of the city....which is constantly on the move. The donkey is a reflection of what most people in the city would love to be .that of having a red carpet status laid out to them ... as most inhabitants of the city are no less than stars ... even if it is only they who believe it. |

Symphony by Tapan Kr. Das & Arpita Das
Tapan’s painting is visually from and line
based. The inner world of philosophical vision in our dreams and
nightmares of love and longing of hopes. The contradictions and
inconsistencies of our civilization are revealed pictorially by a just
position of mars, colors and a complex symbolism which is a synthesis of
modern simplicity. |

Urvashi Paintings by Manjit Singh Theme: Urvashi Series of Paintings are based on the Hindi Poetry 'Urvashi) written by the Great Hindi Poet Ramdhari Singh 'Dinkar'. Though the major portion of the Urvashi is romantic, it emphasises that our Earth has great beauty, more than that of Heaven's, as such, the apsaras aspire to visit the earth from sunset to dawn. Urvashi is the symbol of sanaatan Naari and King Pururava, sanatan purush. aim of man and woman is procreation. and after that woman finds and inner woman. man finds the inner man. This is greater than yoga or tantra. When such is done, there is no self interest; the love free from desire for any return is the highest form of spirituality. Urvashi indicates that the instict for physical attraction is present in animal. But man finds his way from physical to metaphysical. "My aim to create Urvashi series of paintings is to focus the high sense of spirituality, romance and aesthetics abounds in hindi poetry. my work is dedicated to the rashtra bhasha hindi." |
