  Arturo Ripstein, is regarded as most successful Mexican filmmaker internationally. His first films were based on the literary works of major Latin American writers such as marquez and Fuentes. Often set in small towns, Ripstein's films puncuture macho posturing and examine oppressive social conditions and traditions.

Based on a book by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, but set in the for for forties, the film is the story of a long and helpless wait of a Colonel for his pension.

Based on the Greek tragedy MEDEA, this is a present day Mexican version, set in the seediest possible milieu of Mexico City. Story of a women abandoned by her husband and thrown out of her apartment by her landlord - who is now her husband's new father-in-law.

FILM CLUB DISCUSSION - MEDEA (Danish / 1988/76mins) Dir. Lars Von Trier. Known for his dramatic use of non-traditional lighting and colour, Von Trier creates a world of mythic realism in Medea. The film won the Jean d'Arcy prize in France. Film scholar Ira Bhaskar will introduce the film and facilitate the discussion.
