The disasters in this book fall into six broad categories: natural phenomenon; human error; ecological disasters; sheer bad luck and human malevolence.

  • Project management for modern information systems / Brandon, Dan. --Hershey: IRM Press, 2006

  • Another Asia: Rabindranath Tagore and Okakura Tenshin / Bharucha, Rustom. --New Delhi: Oxford University Press, 2006

Set against a panoramic background of inter-Asian cultural politics, and drawing on the intersections of the late Meiji period in Japan and the Swadeshi movement in Bengal, this book elaborates on the ideals of Asia catalysed by the meeting of Rabindranath Tagore and the Japanese art historian and curator Okakura Tenshin in Calcutta in 1902. It positions the early modernist tensions of the first decades of the twentieth century within—and against—the spectre of a unified Asia that concealed considerable political differences. In addition to the countering the imperialist subtext of Okakura’s The Ideals of the East and The Awakening of the East against Tagore’s radical critique of Nationalism, it inflects the dominant tropes of postcolonial theory by highlighting the subtleties of beauty and the interstices of homosociality and love.

  • Public health, ethics, and equity / Anand, Sudhir, ed. --New Delhi: Oxford University Press, 2006

The book centres on five major themes: what is health equity?; health equity and its relation to social justice; health inequalities and responsibilities for health; ethical issues in health evaluation and prioritization; and anthropological perspectives on health equity.

Sociology

  • Indicators for urban and regional planning: the interplay of policy and methods / Wong, Cecilia. London: Routledge, 2006

This book focuses on the measurement and utilization of quantitative indicators in the urban and regional planning field. There has been a resurgence of academic and policy interest in using indicators to inform planning, partly in response to the current government’s information intensive approach to decision-making. The first part of the book sets out the wider policy context, and the political and managerial issues, that impinge on the development of indicators and the supporting statistical infrastructure. The second part focuses on examining the latest debates over methodological issues concerning the construction and analysis of quantitative indicators. In the third part, through the case study analysis of three broad groups of indicators, some of the technical and political issues are explored in greater depth, highlighting the political-managerial perspective on the technical process of indicator development.

  • Planning twentieth century capital cities / Gordon, David L. A. --London: Routledge, 2006

This book is devoted to the planning and development of capital cities in the twentieth century. The focus is not only on recently created capitals. Indeed, the case studies, which make up the core of the book show that, while very different, the development of London or Rome presents as great a challenge to planners and politicians as the design and building of Brasilia or Chandigarh. The book sets out to explore what makes capital cities different from other cities, why their planning is unique, and why there is such variety from one city to another.
