Sanchi rediscovered: a journey through time Bipin Ghosal 1875-1930 / Ghosal, Susheila, com., ed.
New Delhi: Magnum Books, 2006 (Reference) |
| |
|

|
This
book belongs to the realm of manuscript archaeology. It is
pleasant surprise to know that Sanchi was discovered in 1818
by General Taylor, eight years after the discovery of Harappa
by Charles Masson in 1826, and 101 years before the location
of Mohenjodaro. The most attractive and distinctive feature of
Sanchi monuments are the four gateways in the four cardinal
directions of the Great Stupa. The author has brought out many
little known facts about Sanchi.

The
Second Partition: Fault-lines in India's democracy / Patwant
Singh. Australia: Hay House India, 2007
|
| |
 |
This
book is a bold critique of post-Independence India. At a time
when the nation is at a crossroads, this volume is an
invaluable and necessary wake-up call for its leadership and
its citizens. The author casts a keen and unflinching look at
the underbelly of this new economic tiger. From poverty and
unemployment, to communalism, homelessness and the oppression
of women, he closely examines the grave problems that threaten
India today, and the reasons behind them - misgovernment,
power politics, corruption and obsessive militarisation. There
is the first India, which comprises the powerful politicians
and bureaucrats, as well as the affluent upper and middle
classes, and second India, which makes up the rest of the
population - hungry, sick, homeless.

New Delhi: Oxford University Press, 2007 |

collection of essays emphasizes the importance of
contextualization in the production and dissemination of

universe studied and the methods employed; and that no method
is inherently superior or inferior but they are contextually
relevant or irrelevant.

| India's
unending journey: finding balance in a time of change / Tully,
Mark.—London, Rider, 2007
|
|
 |
This
book is about living with uncertainty of certainty, about
accepting the limits to what we can know, and being willing to
question our beliefs. This uncertainty doesn't just apply to
religious beliefs or, indeed, beliefs hostile to religion. In
this thoughtful and remarkable book, he shares the formative
experiences of his British Raj upbringing, his public school
years and early vocation as a priest. Through interviews and
anecdotes, he embarks on a journey that investigates the many
faces of India, from the untouchables of Uttar Pradesh to the
skyscrapes of Gurgaon, from the religious riots of Ayodhya to
the calm of a university campus. And he contrasts his findings
with our lives in the West, especially in Britain and Ireland,
as individuals, as members of communities, as citizens of our
countries, and as people of the globe.
