On the
6th of November CHROMA, an exhibition centring around colour opens at
the Visual Arts Gallery, India Habitat Centre. This exhibition is part
of the celebration of 50 years of Indo-Norwegian relations.
Colour
can entice, frighten, persuade, sell, and even inspire. Chroma attempts
to forge ties between the two countries of India and Norway. The commonality
being colour and its culturally specific connotations within unaccustomed
surrounding. Curated by the two participating Norwegian artists Grete
Byrkjeland and Turid Uldal, CHROMA showcases the works of five different
artists with different cultures and personal experiences are meeting.
The three Indian artists include the Kolkatta based George Martin, and
Delhi based Manjunath Kamath, Arun Kumar H.G. The exhibition serves,
as an interface between two specific and independent entities, both
possessed of an individual artistic vision. Colour becomes the common
linkage between the two nations, Norway where colour plays a muted and
subdued role juxtaposed against India where the celebration of colour
is expressed in every facet of life. The guiding philosophy being that
by placing colour in a three-dimensional space, one becomes aware of
the colours of the environment. Through colour the rhythm of the shapes
change and a dynamic piece of art is created. Chroma provides a fascinating
window into the realm of colour and colouristic expression best expressed
by five artists that call these countries home.
