73rd amendment to the Constitution of India has ensured that 33% of
the seats in all local governing bodies are to be reserved for
women. In last 13 years, over 1 million women have been elected to
their 'gram panchayats'. This is the story of one such woman, Maya
Sorte, a 37-year-old Dalit from Vadwal, Maharashtra. Maya's empathy
for people and commitment to her work has ensured that she has been
elected for a second term in her village 'gram panchayat'. |
